MP5J Disassembly

respond

This video shows how to open the MP5-J (Japan model) made by Tokyo Marui. The MP5 body is a bit of a pain to disassemble (at least for Tokyo Marui models) due to the fact that you have to crack the body into two halves just to get the version 2 mechbox out. Gun provided by Airsoft Extreme.

  1. Nice video, but i still cant get my gun to work.. :(
So i was noticed a little trigger sticking and delayed reaction in the trigger and today it just stopped working. So i took it apart and i noticed that the motor does twitch when the wires are attached but thats all i get? Help me out please

  2. Travis: Check your trigger contacts and make sure they aren’t burn and make sure they’re touching. Also, make sure you have a charged battery.

  3. Can u make a disassembly and reassembly of the Tokyo marui mp5-sd5? I want to upgrade it but its my first gun and i dont want to mess it up.

    by Chris July 15th, 2008

  4. Chris – We would be glad to! We just don’t have a TM SD5 on hand to video. Contact your favorite retailer and ask them to send one to us!

  5. Hello there! Is this video similar to the MP5K version? or can you make a video for the Tokyo Marui MP5K?

    Thanks!

    by Glenn July 16th, 2008

  6. Do you have to remove the gearbox in order to remove the hop-up and inner barrel? Is there anything else that needs to be done in order to remove the hop-up and inner barrel?

    ~Matt

    by Matt July 16th, 2008

  7. Matt, for the TM versions of the MP5, you do have to split the case to get the hopup/barrel assembly out of the gun

    by 6mm July 16th, 2008

  8. Travis take the motor out by itself and see if it turns. If it twitches like you said I would check the wiring from the battery to the motor. Check the fuse as well as the motor connections; they might be broken off partially.

    by Matt July 20th, 2008

  9. 6mm, is opening and mp5k the same as this? Or will you guys make another video on how to get the gearbox out? That’d be great if you guys do make a new video though. Thanks!

  10. is this like the same for the mp5 a4 ris?

  11. So will this work with the galaxy mp5k? i need to get into the motor to change the metal bushings will i be able to use this video or do i have to figure it out?

    by david July 27th, 2008

  12. My friend’s E1 MP5 will not stop firing even on semi auto. Once you pull the trigger it fires by itself regardless on what mode. (the safe works though)

do you think the trigger contacts are busted? Or maybe something with the internal trigger mechanism?

    thanks guys

    by Connor August 12th, 2008

  13. Hello Connor,

Check the tiny spring on the contact things…i dont have any idea what its called…but its right under the tappet plate near the sector gear…that tiny spring pulls back the contacts for the wiring if it doesn’t pull back, there may be tiny obstructions or the tiny spring is cut…by the way, have you opened it? or did that just happen? Hope this helps!

    by Glenn August 13th, 2008

  14. it just happened lol

I guess I’ll help them open it up. Hopefully it’s not a demon gearbox like my E1 G36C (the tappet plate was making the gears lean lol had to take it in because it was too hard for me)

    thanks Glenn

  28. hi there mechbox.com how can i upgrade my mp5 rapid firing and how can i my fps turn into 400 to 450?

by lucky boy December 28th, 2008

  29. can you please show how to replace a barrel

by Decoursey Beach January 1st, 2009

  30. @ lucky boy – High FPS and ROF is a very challenging task which usually ends up with a very temperamental and unreliable AEG. Be prepared to spend literally hundreds of dollars/euros/whatever to make a super-AEG.

  33. can you guys make a video for the extra steps on taking apart a Vector Arms Mp5 RIS. Thanks

    by tnapp January 23rd, 2009

  34. hey Tnapp, there are three screws holding the RIS on the gun. There should be a big phillips head screw on the bottom rail, loosen it by twisting it two or three times. After that there are two other screws on each side of the RIS near the hop-up adjustment lever; take both of the screws out. Then near the front sight there will be a hex head bolt (2.5mm or 2.0mm, I can’t remember which) take that out. After that you should be able to pull the RIS off, BUT BE CAREFUL! the outer barrel is made of plastic unlike the body of the gun, you can scratch and damage it easily. When you need to put back together put in the bolt near the front then the other two screws, after that tighten the big screw on the bottom again. If you tighten the big screw first it will be really hard to get the RIS on.

    by jeremy February 22nd, 2009

  36. Great video! Will the same basic steps used in takeing apart a Galaxy MP5K PDW?

    by Jeff B February 28th, 2009

  37. Hey guys! This video is great and really helped me when I had to disassemble my Mp5 for the first time. Now, I want to do a basic spring upgrade similar to the one in your V2 spring upgrade video. However, I have a TM Mp5A4 and was wondering how this will differ when I try to remove it from the Mp5 body. I assume the wires are in different places? Any and all help is appreciated!

  38. Hey, nice vid its really helped

    by Julian March 17th, 2009

  40. Hi, I bought a used gun with an extended barrel put in (TM MP5 SD5) and need to figure out how to put in the shorter barrel it came with or I’m just going to saw it off. If you can advise on how to switch them out that would be really helpful. Thanks!

  42. I have a Well R5 MP5A5 and it will only shoot fully automatic no matter what position the selector switch is in. I realize this question has already been asked on here but the selector switch on mine will make a clicking sound when it is switched to semi, but not when its switched to automatic. Could this be do to a misalignment or maybe something busted. I haven’t opened the shell or done anything to it just new outta the box. Only a week old too. The clicking sound may be normal but it worried me a bit.

  46. i am looking to take my mp5sd5 apart
will it be pretty much the same as this?

    by sam April 26th, 2009

  47. Hey Josh!
Try pulling the motor out hard with some pliers. If it is still in the handgrip with the plate on it, you mapy want to tap the handgrip plate at the base of the motor. This will release the tension.

  48. i have a g&g pm5a4 it will not shoot fully auto matic but it will shoot semi while full auto is selected however the trigger does not want to be pulled it was working fine just all of a sudden it stopped what could be the cause? thanks

    by Kyle May 7th, 2009

  49. Most likely your safety lever is in the way or any combination of the selector plate / cutoff lever problems. You’ll have to open it up to really find out.

    by 6mm May 7th, 2009

  50. Just a heads up to all the Low End MP5 Owners (AKA Crosman Pulse R74)… I just performed this disassembly on my sons R-74. I disassembled the gun as the gearbox would not drive, like something was broke/jammed inside. The disassembly was identical with the exception that the motor wires were soldered in place.

When I pulled the drive motor from the hand grip a small 1/4″ round slug (like a small coin) fell out of the hand grip. Was this a makeshift spaced for the motor on the gear side or possibly a piece of left over assembly junk (FOD) from the factory?

The gearbox was a WELLS (I’m assuming it’s a V2 Gearbox.) Other than a bunch of nasty lube everything appears intact except the back plug/seat for the spring… the peg that sits inside the spring broke away from the seat. Possible cause of jamming?

    by Steve K May 29th, 2009

  51. Hi Steve,
The metal slug goes on top of the motor (it free floats). There is a small hex screw at the base of the handguard that you can tighten. The hex screw pushes down on the slug which pushes down on the motor for the right gear mesh. Don’t tighten the hex screw to much during assembly or else a grinding gear sound will occur.
Make sure all the springs are in their propper places. Confirm your shimming is not faulty. Make sure the piston head isn’t loose on the piston.
If the gun doesn’t fire, look at the tappet plate/ air nozzle connection.
If the gearbox doesn’t cycle, look at the shimming, make sure the battery isn’t dead, and make sure the motor is working properly.
    R7

    by R7 May 31st, 2009

  52. Thanks R-7…
The gun still acts as though there is something stuck in the gears/gearbox.

I repaired the factory spring guide by replacing the broken off base with a same size pan washer & screw. I performed the assembly/test rotation of the gears & “though” they were good, but it appears they were not.

As I only have $29.99 invested in this gun (cost & shipping – Overstock Auctions.com) I’m going to get metal bushings, a shim pack, spring guide, new air head & air nozzle… Tear it apart when the parts arrive & give it another go.

Would a M110 Spring be an upgrade on a Wells V.2 Gearbox?… I know everyone is thinking (buy a better gun… but my son & I are having a blast moding/repairing this one. :)

  53. Recently I wanted to get out and use my airsoft gun, I have a JG MP5 RAS, but when I put in the battery and mag. I got nothing. It seems like the gears are seized up, but I looked at the inside of it and it all seemed the way it should be. I don’t have any idea what the problem is. Any suggestions?

    by scarey June 6th, 2009

  55. Hi again, Steve,
What are the symptoms? If you can, ONLY use metal gearboxes!!!!!
If you give me some symptoms, I could probably track down the problem. Any sounds?
    R7

    by R7 June 8th, 2009

  56. RE to scarey,
i was wondering that too, turns out its a .050 hex, i found one for a buck over at Sears.

    by Andrew T June 10th, 2009

  57. Hey R7,
This Wells V2 is metal with nylon bushings. It really doesn’t make any sounds other than-
    >you hear the motor try to turn the gearbox, but it won’t… like something has been wedged between 2 of the 3 gears preventing it from spinning the gears.

    >> I pull the motor out of the hand grip and it spins like no tomorrow…

    >>I placed the shims back in the same positions I found them (maybe not a good idea?) and performed the re-assembly-”dry run”… the gears appeared to rotate okay.

    >> the battery has a full charge (8.4v 1100) and will run either of our Pulse R72’s for several hours of play…

…any thoughts? Piston Jamb? Spring guide broken again or off center?

And while I’ve mentioned the Pulse R72… I saw where Wells offers that G-3 with a metal gearbox now. Do you know if that is also a Wells metal V-2?… I’ve yet to crack open the R72’s so do you think a Metal gearbox would be a drop in affair? (I got TWO R-72’s for $22.99 from Overstock Autions… that included shipping!) I’m just thinking ahead for when the plastic gearboxes fail…

    Thanks in advance-
    Steve

  59. hey i have a ca mp5a4 (with a full stock) but need to rewire it to the handguard is the dissasembly similair to the tokyo marui? i’ve never rewired a gun before and am a little afraid to try but with the proper help i think i may be able to do it.

    by Luke June 13th, 2009

  60. Hi,
I think I found your problem. I think your motor is in backwards so that it spins the opposite way! When this happens, the motor is pushing the gears against the anti reversal latch! No wonder you gearbox won’t cycle when it has to push against a stationary metal object!!!!
If I were you, I would do a good shim job for increased durability instead of sticking with stock shimming.
Please tell me if installing the motor the other way fixes the problem!

  67. Hi, i have a question, about my mp5j. On the selector switch, the screw is not a phillips head. it’s this wierd looking, sort of star shaped thing.I’m not sure what it is, and i dont know how to remove it. help would be very appreciated. thanks.

    by Austin July 21st, 2009

  68. Austin:
From your description, its a “Torx” screw.
Two waysI can think of to remove it are:
1 ) Get the right size Torx driver (recommended).
2 ) Find a flat bladed screwdriver that can fit into opposite cuts in the star and turn ( will work, but could damage the screw).

  76. hey I have a tokyo marui mp5 sd6 and when I pull the trigger it doesn’t shoot, but the trigger goes all the way back as if it were shooting. I tried to unjam the gun, and I got a bb out, but I think the only reason the bb jammed is because the gun didn’t shoot it (obviously). I recharged the battery last night and put it in today and it’s still not working. I was thinking about taking the gun apart but this looks pretty complicated and I’ll probably lose a part lol. 83. I just recieved my cyma .023 and the fire selector switch keeps popping off its track. I carefully opened it up and found there to be nothing broken or missing. I then reassembled it and the selector worked…once! I need to know if there is any way to fix this issue. thanks

    by mike b December 1st, 2009

  84. MP5-J
so I’ve broken (too much action..) the Cocking Lever(MP-39), which has snapped off,
the Reinforced Cocking Bolt(MP-54) part that the Cocking Lever attaches to, seems to have disappeared to the front end and i’m not sure whether it’s MP-53 or MP-54 part that is still movable; the ‘tube’ seen from the side,

so I want to ask whether I have to split the receiver to access and (try to..) fix the inner parts of the Cocking Receiver (MP-52N)

there is the part in the video where you loosen the Cocking Receiver (05:05), but not take it off entirely, I think that’s the inner part I need access to,
buy myself a replacement Cocking Lever and perhaps Cocking Bolt (??) too, then place them in,

this is a great video anyway, thanks for showing how intricate the inside is to work(!!)
