Airsoft barrel thread diameter

respond

This week’s question involves thread diameter and fitting a silencer to your airsoft gun. So, which way am I supposed to turn this thing anyway?

What size are the flash hider threads on Tokyo Maruis? I’m looking to make my own mock silencer, but I don’t know what size tapping bit I need to buy.

Most AEGs have a 14mm x 1mm (fine pitch) thread with either a clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation or pitch to the threads. So, it will either screw on using a righty tighty, lefty loosy method (which is clockwise/positive) or it screws to the left to tighten (anti-clockwise/negative).

Each manufacturer has its own idea about whether to use clockwise or anti-clockwise, but I feel we can safely say that MOST AEGs use an anti-clockwise or negative 14mm thread. Tokyo Marui definitely uses the negative, anti-clockwise thread on its AEGs. In contrast, some guns have non-standard thread sizes like the TM SOCOM Mk23 pistol which uses a 16mm positive thread.

Just an FYI for those of you in the USA.

Technically speaking some imitation suppressors are subject to “legal issues” with regards to USA BATFE rules. I have ever experienced any issues with the use of an airsoft suppressor, but if you’re doing something stupid with an airsoft gun and it has a suppressor on it… you could be looking at some additional legal problems. This applies to homemade “silencers” as well.

  1. Great info, I’ve seen so many frustrated people who have tried removing their flashider without knowing what they are doing wrong :P

  2. Maybe you should write “When looking down into your barrel …”
Or you might still be confused

  3. These MechBox Mondays are a great idea. They’ve been extemly helpful already.

  4. Hi! I’m planning to use 11.1V/1200maH Lithium Polymer battery on my JG M4CQB AEG, currently using 8.4V/1500 Ni-Cad. Haven’t had a recent upgrade yet except re-shimming the gears. do I need any further upgrade on my gun’s internals? Also, can i use any type of Li-Poly charger with balancer or there’s a specific type that I need? Please advise. Thanks in advance! Great site, by the way..

  5. Mechbox is a great resource site for us players, specially those who are trying to learn the dynamics of “gunsmithing”.. Hope to see more helpful infos.. More power!

  6. @John. I would STRONGLY discourage using an 11.1v lipo in your stock JG. It will eat the internals for dinner. If its a high ROF your going for, and you have the budget, get a KWA M4.

  7. What is the thread pitch/depth? this is only marginally helpfull without that.

  8. @ Andrew – Good point. I added the 14x1mm into the article. Most AEGs should have the 14mm x 1mm fine thread pitch.

  9. Not to hijack, but I also want to put a 11.1 lipoly into my gun. I just got a gen 3 Dboys SCAR with reinforced mechbox, “durable ultra high torque motor, premium reinforced spring, reinforced metallic bushings, and premium cylinder assembly with reconstructed and reinforced air seal for improved performance and durability”. I haven’t crono-ed it yet, but the company claims 420fps out of the box. Will the battery still kill it or will I be okay without upgrading?

  10. Thanks to Mike @AirsoftExtreme. I made a correction to the article. TM Mk23 SOCOM uses a 16mm positive thread.

  11. Ok, a bit of a dumb question, but, If my gun has a negative thread, do I get a flash hider with a negative thread OR a flash hider with a positive thread?

    Thanks!

  12. That’s not a dumb question because I don’t know!

  13. does anyone know what size thread diameter an echo 1 g36c uses, I bought a suppressor that was supposed to be 14mm negative but it was too big, at first I thought it was that the threads on my gun might be stripped but I bought a new outer barrel that was identical to the one I had and it still didn’t fit. Is the problem my gun or the suppressor?

  14. Altman and R7

A negative thread barrel will require a negative threaded flash hider.

Great website and service. Is there a library we can look to for “back issues”? I just started reading this site and can imagine I missed a whole lot of great stuff!

  15. @ john mina
i do practice gunsmithing and i had a lil’ know how on several airsoft toppic

jg m4cqbr if all metal has this basic upgrade parts already installed upon purchase
    1.metal piston teeth
    2. 7mm metal bushing with bearing
    3. mosfet

at this stock set up alone you could already use up a li-po battery since basic high rof upgrade are already installed

BUT! if you had the plastic version of JG M4 cqbr then you needed to put up this items first
    1. metal bushing
    2. piston bosy with metal teeh
    3. and reshimme your aeg for better rof

high battery voltage = increase in rof
